I have been surprised by the lack of civil political discourse in some of the threaded discussions in the blogs. I suspect it might reflect the sort of people we are (i.e., in American society). Here is the post if you are interested: http://euandus3.wordpress.com/2009/11/03/are-the-american-people-really-like-mr-smith/

Kim, thanks for your comments. I'm all in favor of citizens speaking their minds to politicians. I'm not at all supportive of either party ignoring citizens, although, lately, the Republicans take the cake. My point here is that the uproars we're seeing on television are scripted by a set of high level "grassroots" specialists in the employ of the health insurance industry. Therefore, it's not citizen outrage but, rather, the script that Dick Army and his crew write.

I buy my own insurance directly from the source, as I suspect you do owning a ranch (I'm an unapologetic beef eater!). The cost is horrendous. I don't expect that any legislation coming out of Congress will do anything for my situation. I see this debate, though, as a positive effort. Single payer is not socialized medicine any more than Medicare is - you have one point of payment that doesn't require a 50% cost of goods sold, which would include a profit margin (you double the price from the outset). With something like Medicare or the VA, the government doesn't have to do this, it's administrative costs are much lower than private insurance companies, and private practitioners are preserved.

The insincerity of Army's army of shouters is matched by the legislative negligence of Congress to date in failing to allow Medicare to negotiate discounts with the drug manufacturers. The VA does and gets 40-60% discounts. Why not Medicare - it would certainly help seniors. Because Congress has been serving Big Pharma for decades and it won't stop now.

This is a life and death issue. Those who deceive, the Blue Dogs (on the Big Pharma payroll); the shouters and their organizers (on AETNA/CIGNA's payrolls); and anyone else who fails to represent issues honestly cause citizens and their families to suffer needlessly. I find that disgusting.

Good luck on the ranch. I'll take mine medium rare.

Hmmmm.....don't think you got it either! Seems on July 4th in the very same town Doggett represents, Austin, Senator Cornyn (R-Tx) got shouted down by the attendees of a Tea Party. It isn't about the parties, it is about people waking up to the fact that Washington Representatives and Senators do not listen to the people who they represent. I'm sick of the Democrat spin and I'm sick of the Republican spin. I wish the Special Interest Groups would keep their noses out. For one second could you not bash the Liberal Special Interest Groups. Just one really disgruntled citizen who makes up her own mind. By the way I'm for Health Care Reform, but not for Socialized Medicine or anything else that will cost me more money in taxes and penalties. Just a simple Texan Cattle Rancher.

This behavior of the mortgage and financial companies is unacceptable. Instead of being bailed out, they should go bankrupt.

What wasn't mentioned in the Defenders of Wildlife documentary is the motivation behind Alaska's aerial wolf hunting policy. It is NOT being done because of any threat to people or livestock, rather it is to boost the moose and caribou population for Alaska's big game trophy hunting tourism industry. It has been driven by the hunting industry lobby and ironically funded by taxpayer money. We, the taxpayer, are to pay that $150/leg bounty. Compassionate hockey mom, Palin is not. Views typical of the American soccer/hockey mom? I sincerely hope not...
